Sarawak marks King’s birthday with high tea reception

SERIAN: A high-tea reception was held here yesterday to mark the state-level official birthday celebration of Yang di-Pertuan Agong Al-Sultan Abdullah Ri’ayatuddin Al-Mustafa Billah Shah.

Yang di-Pertua Negeri Tun Pehin Sri Abdul Taib Mahmud was the guest-of-honor at the event, which was held at SJK Chung Hua Multipurpose Hall.

Among the highlights of the celebration was the cutting of a cake by Taib who was joined by members of the state cabinet led by Chief Minister Datuk Patinggi Abang Johari Tun Openg.

Following the cake-cutting ceremony, the Head of State presented welfare aid to 100 recipients.

Deputy chief ministers Datuk Amar Douglas Uggah and Datuk Amar Awang Tengah Ali Hasan, Education, Science and Technological Research Minister Dato Sri Michael Manyin and more than 500 members of the local community were among those present.

The King took the oath of office and was sworn in at Istana Negara on Jan 3, and was proclaimed the Yang di-Pertuan Agong on July 30.
