KUCHING: Seni Khat Action Team (Sekat) National secretary Arun Dorasamy has praised Datuk Patinggi Abang Johari Tun Openg on his approach in developing Sarawak’s education policy.

He said when he met with Abang Johari earlier this afternoon, the chief minister said to him that he wanted Sarawak students to be able to compete globally and not just be a ‘jaguh kampung’ (village champion).

“He has a very good vision and we are impressed with it. He is interested in setting up international schools in Sarawak and the digital economy. He is preparing Sarawakian students to not just become ‘jaguh kampung’ but to be able to compete in the global arena.

“He said he does not want to politicise education issues. That is why he also agreed with us that the Jawi Khat lessons should be made a choice, not mandatory for students to learn in schools.

“That is why when we were advised by the Chief Minister’s Office to postpone our National Language Congress, we do not mind because we can see the Chief Minister’s (Abang Johari) commitment to ensure education as a tool for Sarawakian students to be able to compete in the global arena,” Arun told reporters after the meeting.

He told reporters earlier that Sekat will be postponing its National Language Congress, which was scheduled to be held on February 16, until the 2019 Novel Coronavirus outbreak has subsided.

Sekat together with other organising committee members of the National Language Forum had paid a courtesy call on Abang Johari to brief him on the congress as well as discuss matters related to the federal Education Ministry’s policies.
