KUCHING: Chief Minister Datuk Patinggi Abang Johari Tun Openg and his wife Datin Patinggi Datuk Amar Juma’ani Tuanku Bujang joined 137 children under the charge of Orphans Welfare Organisation of Malaysia (Peryatim) Sarawak, at a ‘buka puasa’ (break-of-fast) event at Hotel Grand Margherita here on Friday.

The gathering was hosted by Sarawak Economic Development Corporation (SEDC) as part of its corporate social responsibility (CSR).

Prior to breaking the fast, Abang Johari handed out goodies and incentives to all the children.

According to SEDC chairman Tan Sri Datuk Amar Abdul Aziz Husain, the annual programme was aimed at reaching out to the less-fortunate group of society, especially the children under Peryatim Sarawak.

“We, at SEDC and our subsidiaries, are delighted to have been able to bring cheer to these children. This is our way of rendering support to individuals in need,” he said in a statement.

At the function, Abdul Aziz handed over a cheque for ‘zakat’ (tithe) worth RM320,000 to Abang Johari, who received it on behalf of Tabung Baitulmal Sarawak (TBS).

Witnessing the handover were Minister of Tourism, Arts, Culture, Youth and Sports Datuk Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah, TBS general manager Datu Abang Mohd Shibli Abang Nailie, Sarawak Islamic Council president Datu Misnu Taha and SEDC general manager Abdul Hadi Abdul Kadir.
