KUCHING: The Sarawak Housing and Real Estate Developers’ Association (Sheda) hopes the state government will consider introducing a scheme similar to the My First Home Financing Scheme (MyDeposit) initiated by the previous federal government.

Sheda president Dr Christopher Ngui said by granting a substantial amount for down payment, it gives Sarawakians a choice of diverse housing range in different localities and, at the same time, eases the burden of buyers having to fork out the initial down payment.

“Such scheme will have immediate and positive impact to the local housing market by dedicating an allocation of funds for at least 3,000 units annually for the next two to three years to first-time home buyers in Sarawak,” he said at Sheda’s 25th anniversary dinner cum Excellence Awards 2018 at Borneo Convention Centre Kuching (BCCK) on Friday.

The event was officiated by Chief Minister Datuk Patinggi Abang Johari Tun Openg.

At the same time, Ngui said Sheda is also concerned about the success of the Malaysia My Second Home (MM2H) programme in Sarawak, as the state’s policy and guidelines are not as favourable compared to other states in Peninsular Malaysia.

“Sheda is keen to collaborate with Sarawak’s tourism and housing ministries to streamline Sarawak’s policy and guidelines to be at least on par with Peninsular Malaysia in order to be competitive.”

He pointed out that during a recent study trip to China, a memorandum of understanding (MoU) was signed between one of Sheda’s members and two China companies to promote Sarawak MM2H. He said Sheda will continue to actively promote Sarawak MM2H, but that an increase in direct flights from Kuching to major cities in the Asia Pacific region including Japan, Australia and China is needed.

“With good air connectivity, it would be advantageous as it will attract more foreigners to visit (Sarawak) and even invest in properties as their holiday homes.”

The event also witnessed Raymond Sim Hee Pang of Yoshi Development Sdn Bhd (Nationlink Group of Companies) winning the Sheda Property Man of the Year 2018 award.

Other winners included Hock Seng Lee Construction Sdn Bhd (Merit Award for Master Plan – La Promenade Kuching; Merit Award for Landed Development – Precinct Premiere at La Promenade Lots 1610-1621 and 1632-1663), Saradise Sdn Bhd (Merit Award for Shopoffices – Saradise Kuching Lots 19679-19739 and 19773-19843) and Sendayan Realty Sdn Bhd (Commendation for Strata Development (Low Rise) – Aurora Height Blocks 1,2,6 and 7).

Minister of Local Government and Housing Datuk Dr Sim Kui Hian was among the distinguished guests at the event.
