KUCHING: The Sarawak government will continue with the construction of a waterfront spanning from Kampung Sungai Bedil to Kampung Tanjong here.

According to Chief Minister Datuk Patinggi Abang Johari Tun Openg, the project was initially approved by the federal government back when it was under Barisan Nasional (BN), but the funds were later withdrawn after Pakatan Harapan (PH) took over the federal government.

“We will continue with this project using funds from our own coffers to benefit the people, especially those in and around these areas,” he spoke at the opening of ‘Fiesta Samariang’ in Kampung Lintang here yesterday.

Abang Johari said the waterfront, set to face the city centre across the Sarawak River, would not only beautify the village areas, but could also be used by the locals to host a variety of recreational activities.

The chief minister said the open tender for the project would be released this year, and should all that is done, works would commence immediately.

“This project is just one of efforts by the Sarawak government to beautify areas across the city. The good news is that the project will not affect the houses located near the project site. The residents will not be relocated and the existing houses will not be demolished,” he assured everyone.

Separately, Abang Johari called upon all Sarawakians to strive in finding solutions to problems, rather than blaming others for them.

“If there’s a problem, please sit together to discuss and find the solution. Sarawakians should cultivate this culture for our own good,” he said.

Petra Jaya MP Datuk Seri Fadillah Yusof, Assistant Minister of Law, State-Federal Relations and Project Monitoring and Samariang assemblywoman Sharifah Hasidah Sayeed Aman Ghazali, and Kuching North Datuk Bandar Datuk Abang Abdul Wahap Abang Julai were among those present at the event.
